When one set of coils is connected to the AC power supply, the other set of coils produces another voltage of AC due to electromagnetic induction, and the voltage on the two sets of coils is proportional to the number of turns of coils wound. The coil connected to the power supply is usually called the primary coil, and the coil connected to the load side is called the secondary coil. If the secondary side coil voltage is higher than the primary side, known as step-up transformer; conversely, the secondary side voltage becomes lower, known as step-down transformer.
