Galvanized steel is similar to hot-dip galvanized steel in that it is first immersed in a hot bath of molten zinc. The difference, however, is further processing using a method called annealing. Immediately after hot-dipping in molten zinc, the annealing process begins, in which the coated steel undergoes an in-line heat treatment that diffuses excess zinc from the steel before solidifying. This technique gives the steel a thinner zinc coating than regular galvanized steel. This process fuses the coating with the steel substrate and leaves a slightly rough rather than smooth surface - making it ideal for paint to adhere to.
Galvanized steel is primarily used in applications that require painting over the steel. As mentioned before, the annealing process gives the finished product a matte/non-smooth surface, which enhances paint adhesion more than hot-dip galvanized steel, which typically exhibits a smoother/shivier surface . This baked-on zinc coating protects the steel beneath it from the elements while increasing its resistance to scratches, corrosion and wear.
Galvanized steel is also highly weldable because the zinc coating, fused to the base material, does not melt or cause buildup during the welding process (this buildup is also known as slag). Since alloyed galvanized steel requires coating Paint, thereby adding an extra layer of protection to the steel, so the typical coating applied is lighter than that typically applied to hot-dip galvanized steel.
