G90 galvanized sheet metal
G90 galvanized steel is a corrosion-resistant galvanized steel product. According to ASTM standards (ASTM-A525 or ASTM-A653/A653M), "G+number" is used to describe the thickness of the zinc coating on galvanized steel. The "G" here refers to galvanizing, and the number refers to the weight of zinc on the surface of the steel plate, such as G30, G60, G90, G185, etc. The higher the number, the thicker the zinc coating.
For example, G90 coating adds approximately 1.6 mils (0.0016 inches, or 42 microns) to the overall thickness of the coated panel. This means approximately 0.0008 inches (21 microns) of zinc on each surface so that the coating is applied evenly to both sides of the board.
To make metal sheets more durable and corrosion-resistant, you need to use zinc. During the hot-dip galvanizing process, steel panels are immersed in molten zinc at a temperature of 850 degrees Fahrenheit. During this process, the steel plate and zinc form a zinc-iron intermetallic compound layer. The zinc coating ends up on top of the sheet because it is more reactive than iron.
For all outdoor applications where the galvanized material is exposed and unpainted, a minimum of G:90 (Z275) is recommended, and for additional protection in corrosive or contaminated environments, heavier coated products should be considered.
For end uses where the product is painted and a smooth surface is required, galvanized materials or satin-finished steel (A40) should be used. The steel has a dark gray appearance with no bright spots, making it ideal for painting. Common uses include making fireplaces, trailers, signs and enclosures. This material should not be used in the external environment without additional protective measures such as painting.
